Storm Drain Marking Project - Preserving our Waterways

The City of Molalla is completing a project of marking each of its storm drains around town with drain markers, as depicted in the photo, to alert the public that their intended use is for rainwater only. Per Molalla Municipal Code "any matter other than unpolluted runoff or storm drainage" is considered prohibited discharge. (MMC 13.08.840 Discharges into storm drains, Ord. 2007-07 §1; Ord. 1987-6 §l)

The majority of Molalla's storm drains flow directly into natural drainage ways, creeks, or wetlands without settlement in detention ponds or other filtering systems. Any pollutants such as paint, motor oil, antifreeze, non-biodegradable carwash soaps, and pesticides that make their way into these drains are discharged into the ecosystem, threatening fish, wildlife, and drinking water supply downstream.

We ask each of our citizens to manage spills and discharges in accordance with the city's rules. Please do your part to keep our waterways safe and clean.
