Art Walk Installation
The following peices of artwork constructed by sculptor, Ben Dye have been installed. This artwork was paid for by a generous grant from the Mt. Hood Territory Tourism Grant.
- "Salmon on the River" piece is located at Fox Park. Fish were very important to the Molalla Tribe.
- "Camas Plant" is installed at Bear Creek Byway. Camas root were gathered, cooked, dried and eaten.
- "Huckleberry Bush" is located at The Dentist Off Main. Dr. Olesya Salathe graciously donated the funds and space available for this piece. Huckleberries were carefully cultivated and dried for winter. The roots were used for medicine.
- "Platform Fishing Boat" has been installed in the green space in front of Bi-Mart and O'Reilly's. Platform fishing was common among the Molalla. The river was an important connection for trade and travel and as a food source. The Molalla traversed the river in flat bottom boats.
- "Coyote's Swallowing Match with Grizzly Bear" is located in Long Park. Please click here for a summary of their story, along with a video of the installation.
- "Basket Start" is located at Clark Park. Baskets and basket weaving played an important role in the lives of the Molalla people. Everything needed for basket weaving was gathered from the surrounding environment and the art used in weaving the baskets is a reflection of that environment.
